Two years ago this north side of our house was thickly forested with buckeye and brush. A stand of twenty-five bay trees created a fire ladder up to a large oak next to the houses (the large oak is at right in the picture). One lone bay tree stands in the middle of this picture, waiting for another work day. We may actually survive the next big forest fire (it is coming, so I hear).

Work continues on the old road, next to the mysterious "lost road." This fire was home to a pack rat. No, it was not a field mouse. I verified its origin when it ran out of the burn pile directly at me.

If you wonder if this picture came from the fire in December that nearly started a forest fire, no, that fire was about five times bigger. Water hoses are a great thing.

Frederick's account of our near-forest fire makes us realize that perhaps fire reduction should not be left solely in the hands of a 40-year-old postpartum woman.
