This chicken was on holiday in the orchard, feeding on the abundance of grass and weeds. She and her friends had to be captured and taken back to their house before darkness set in lest they be a night-time snack for coyotes. I thought it was great exercise for Sander. He suggested we pull the weeds and take them to the chicken yard.

First Fire

November 14 was the date of our first fire of 2009, in a mountain home warmed only with wood heat. Just when you announce you have had no need, you do. I was going to wait a few days and only get the house warm in the run-up to Thanksgiving. Mom caved "for mental health reasons."

November 14 is a record for this property, at least since my parents purchased it in 1982. I may begin to track it and conduct a Sequoia National Forest study of climate change.
